Looking forward to our ride next week❤️ x

Last post re tiny Maxs training. Here he is at a very low key training day, paired up with one of our miniatures. Making sure that he is cool driving in company and has seen some cones and an obstacle. Then, safely delivered home and driven out in his own village with his brother Hawker. He has been a joy to train and I know that his owner will love and enjoy him as much as we have.Image attachment

Ok I need this phone As I miss my app 😂

There is a beautiful poem about Shetlands or Shelties as they are known, it’s my all time favourite written by Homer Hawkins in 1932, it’s brilliant I hope you enjoy!

The Sheltie,
Bonny, bijou dray horse
Some forty inches high,
little kiddies’ riding horse
Trotting gaily by,
Constitution hard as nails,
Sound as any bell,
How long you’ve lived in Shetland Isles
Nobody can tell.

You’re a perfect model
Of what a horse should be;
Fine head, arched neck,
Action straight and free,
Good shoulder, short back,
And ev’ry leg correctly placed
To carry you along.

Deep chest, round ribs,
Broad and sturdy loin,
Well ribbed up and well let down
Where flank and stifle join;
Long above the knees and hocks,
Short, flat cannon bone,
Pasterns springy, long and clean,
Tough hoofs as hard as stone.

Then you haven’t bobbed your hair
Like a modern girl,
Plentiful and straight it falls
Far too fine to curl;
Mane to point of shoulder,
Forelock to your nose,
And tail that reaches to the ground
When you are in repose.

You can live on seaweed
If other food should fail,
You can stand the driving sleet
Of bitter winter gale;
Shelter you object to
Because it is your boast
That snug within your woolly coat
You’re just as warm as toast.

Down in deepest coalmines,
Working like a mole,
Many thousand times you’ve dragged
Hutches full of coal;
Formerly you lived there
Till you lost your sight,
Now thank God, you’ve been redeemed
From perpetual night.

Trotting with a rider,
Trotting in a cart,
Everybody looks at you
And thinks your jolly smart;
All the children love you,
Women gush and coo,
And every man admires your style
Who knows what you can do.

Taken altogether,
Ev’ry one must own
You’re the greatest little horse
The World has ever known;
Beautiful and hardy,
Diligent and strong,
I wish I knew more folk like you
To help the world along.

So very, very true. My life has been enriched by the 8 Shetlands I have had in my life and I’m fortunate to still share it with 4 at the moment 💕💕

Saw this on another site..such a lovely picture 🥰🐎🥰

Great picture 💫

Love mine ❤️ and the poem and picture

Little Maxs journey to becoming a pairs pony. It is useful to longrein the ponies as a pair so that they learn to move off together and become used to the breaching tightening, if they arent going forward. They are joined by an elastic tie up doubled over at the pole rings on their breast collars and their outside traces. The taller pony is on the inside to allow for the camber of the road, although Max will be trained to go both sides of the pole. Most of the time, he did manage to keep up with his slightly bigger friend. After a few goes, the ponies tend to adjust their pace and fall into step with each other. It is more comfortable for them.... Imagine trying to run a three legged race with a big burley farmer! Easier to compromise and step together!Image attachment

More progress with tiny Max. He's been a tiny tots lead rein pony for most of his life and just been used to following. So getting him to go forward by himself is a big ask. His current owner has done some great groundwork with him which has helped. We have been practicing transitions on long reins which has also helped. We are very pleased with him. ... Great training session at Stonehouse Stables today by kind permission of Tessa Reeve. This lovely owner Lesley Luxford knocked over 10 seconds of her original cones time. Im also impressed with how she hugged the obstacles but kept the pony going forward in a smooth rhythm.Image attachment
